The Magritte Museum is located next to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts. The Magritte Museum covers 2,500m² and is dedicated to the work of Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte. Magritte is considered one of the top artists in the world and the top Belgian artist of the 20th century. The museum building is the former neo-classical Hotel Altenloh on Place Royale which has been restored. The works are spread over 5 floors and include more than 200 pieces which is the largest collection of Magritte's work in the world.
The collection is multidisciplinary and includes paintings in oil and gouaches, drawings, sculptures as well as painted objects, posters, vintage photographs, short films by the artist and musical scores. The museum is also the base for extensive research into the painter and holds archives about his life and work.
