The Ajuda National Palace is a monument. It was built on the site of a makeshift wooden building to house the royal family after the 1755 earthquake. It was planned to be an elegant neoclassical building with a modern style. Is has been a National Monument since 1910 and it is not only the ancient royal house and decorative arts museum but also the headquarters of other institutions linked to the Portuguese culture and scene of official ceremonies
