A curiosity if only for its contradictory name, the Old-New Synagogue has stood on this spot for the best part of a millennium.

It is Europe’s oldest active synagogue, and its soaring gothic arches are said to be built on stones brought from Jerusalem … by angels.

Legend has it that the attic above these arches houses a golem created to protect the city from harm.
